CCSF Accreditation - The Issue

CCSF Accreditation: An Overview

In July 2012, after their regular accreditation examination of City College of San Francisco (CCSF), the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) placed CCSF on Show Cause status. The ACCJC found CCSF to be in substantial non-compliance with its eligibility requirements, standards and policies, and we were required to prove (or “show cause”) why accreditation should not be withdrawn.

The ACCJC recommended sweeping improvements in 14 key areas and gave us a deadline of –March 15, 2013 to satisfy those recommendations. These recommendations reached into every corner of our structure – issues related to the institution’s mission, planning processes, student learning outcomes, finances, human resources, physical facilities, technology, and governing structures and more.

For a year, CCSF worked  to address the issues threatening our accreditation. We improved in many areas, but it was not enough to completely right our course.

On July 3, 2013, unsatisfied with the level of improvements made over the course of the year, the ACCJC acted to terminate CCSF’s accreditation, effective July 2014.

CCSF Accreditation - The IssueWe have requested a review of this decision and are now redoubling our efforts to meet the recommendations of the Commission and keep this important institution open for the people of San Francisco.

Under firm guidance from Dr. Robert Agrella, the appointed special trustee to lead the accreditation effort, CCSF is doing all it can to work with all of our partners at the city and state level to improve our operations and meet the standards of accreditation required by the ACCJC.

This journey will not be easy. Some difficult and unpopular decisions will have to be made if CCSF is to remain viable, but we are confident we can work swiftly and transparently to move CCSF forward.

This website, a joint effort between CCSF and the California Community College State Chancellor’s Office, is an important step toward meeting those transparency and accountability goals. Our interactive Roadmap to Success and regular updates from our Special Trustee will provide up-to-date information  on exactly where we are in the  effort to maintain accreditation and improve our institution.
