Will City College close next year?
The decision of the ACCJC is not final. The College has a right to request a review of the commission’s decision, which has done. After a decision has been rendered on the review, the college can appeal. During this time, work will continue on addressing the recommendations from ACCJC.
What will happen to transfer students?
City College transferable units will transfer and are accepted by colleges and universities as recognized units from an accredited institution.
Will the College still be open during the Spring 2014 semester?
Yes, we are preparing a class schedule for the Spring 2014 semester and will be open, accredited and enrolling students.
Am I still eligible for financial aid?
Yes. The college remains open and accredited. Transferable units will transfer, degrees and certificates will be recognized as awarded from an accredited institution, and students eligible for financial aid, will still receive that aid.
What is a review process?
The ACCJC has a Policy on Review of Commission Actions. We have a right to request a review of the commission’s decision. If the decision of the commission, following the review, upholds the termination of the institution, the institution will then have the right to appeal in accordance with the ACCJC bylaws. The institution’s status of “show cause” remains in effect until the termination action becomes final. City College remains an accredited institution during the review and appeal process.

I am an incoming freshman. Should I plan to still attend? If the college does have to close, how will I transfer after one year?
We urge you to attend City College and begin your college career with us as we move through the review process. The college is open and accredited. Should the college have to close, we will work with students to help find a new educational path.
What is accreditation?
The Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) accredits associate degree granting institutions in the Western region of the U.S. ACCJC operates under the corporate entity the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). The ACCJC is one of seven regional accrediting commissions. The ACCJC is authorized to operate by the U.S. Department of Education through the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008. Accreditation is a voluntary system of self-regulation developed to evaluate overall educational quality and institutional effectiveness (The Commission’s complete Purpose Statement is available in Article I, section 2 of its Bylaws). The ACCJC accreditation process provides assurance to the public that the accredited member colleges meet the Standards; the education earned at the institutions is of value to the student who earned it; and employers, trade, or profession-related licensing agencies, and other colleges and universities can accept a student’s credential as legitimate.
What is “Show Cause” status?
When the accrediting commission finds an institution to be in substantial non-compliance with its eligibility requirements, standards or policies, or when it has not responded to the imposed conditions, ACCJC may require an institution to show cause why its accreditation should not be withdrawn at the end of a specified period. During this time, an institution is subject to reports and extra visits to be determined by the commission. During this Show Cause period, the institution remains accredited and we are doing everything we can to maintain accreditation.
What are some of the issues at CCSF according to the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC)?
In the ACCJC Evaluation Report, there are 14 recommendations that specify areas of improvement. These recommendations cover issues related to the institution’s mission, planning processes, student learning outcomes, finances, human resources, physical facilities, technology, and governing structures. Why does CCSF have to prepare a formal plan to close?
While on Show Cause status, ACCJC requires the college to prepare a “Closure Report” which describes the plan in case of closure. The “Closure Report” is essential to enable a process for students to continue an education plan. CCSF is taking every step and precaution to address the Commission's recommendations to demonstrate why its accreditation should be continued.
